Visualization of polarization measured by a liquid crystal polarization imager. This is a beach on Lizard Island close to the Australian Barrier reef. Polarized Rayleigh scattering of sunlight from the atmosphere increases in degree of polarization away from the sun (the sun is to the upper left of the picture) noted as increased saturation of the color hue cyan representing orientation. Specular reflection off the ocean has significant degree of polarization noted by the strong saturation of red. Beach sand reflects light with little degree of polarization.
